GUS Scott-Morriss remains frustrated Southend United have not had a “fair crack” at promotion this season.
The Shrimpers have been docked 10 points for financial infringements and have been short of players due to a transfer embargo.
And Scott-Morriss is sad that stops Kevin Maher’s being able to fulfil their full potential.
“It’s disappointing that this team hasn’t had a fair crack at it,” said Scott-Morris.
“A lot of fans and players leave the ground on Saturday feeling like if we had a fair chance this team could do something special.
“That’s what leaves a sour taste in our mouths at the minute.
“The manager has said it as well and we feel like we’re putting out fires all the time.
“When that happens you’re liable to have a slip up on the way and you’re not able to win the game.”
Blues had no fit strikers for Saturday’s clash with Bromley and were also able to select just one substitute.
Without a second choice goalkeeper, Scott-Morriss ended up playing the final half an hour in goal.
And it remains tough for the squad to take.
“It’s frustrating because the talent we’ve got here we can really challenge at the top of the table but we do help,” said Scott-Morriss.
“You can’t be having me in goal and one sub and expect to do anything with the season which is really disappointing.”
The Shrimpers fought hard in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Bromley.
And Scott-Morriss was happy to go in goal once Martin went off injured just past the hour mark – despite feeling slightly apprehensive.
“I was quite nervous and I think the first goal-kick showed that,” said Scott-Morriss.
“I was a bit shaky but in fairness it was relatively easy because the boys put their foot on the gas in the second half and I didn’t have a lot to do.
“There were a few moments where I though ‘oh no, here we go’ but it was quite a nice outing in the end.”
Blues have been without a substitute goalkeeper for the whole season.
But it had not been decided who will fill in between the sticks until Martin headed off.
“When we went over for the huddle we were talking about who was going to go in goal and who fancied it so I put myself forward,” said Scott-Morriss.
“The gaffer asked if I’d done it before and I said yes but I’m not sure I have!
“Maybe I had as a kid but it was just one of those things and whoever stepped up had to do a job for the team.
“It is also helped Mauro (Vilhete) can play wing-back as well so it wasn’t going to dislodge too many other players on pitch.”
Blues fought hard after the enforced alterations and Scott-Morriss joked he would be checking a bonus after not conceding!
“I’m not sure if I get a clean sheet bonus but I’ll be having a word with David Martin for sure,” he added.
