TOM Lawrence insists he is super excited to be joining the consortium taking charge of Southend United.

Lawrence has been the Shrimpers’ chief executive since May 2021.

And he jumped at the chance to increase his involvement at Roots Hall.

“I’m super excited and super proud too,” said Lawrence.

“It’s been a journey from being a supporter to being an employee and now part of the consortium alongside some pretty formidable people.

“I hope I can contribute and help the club thrive.”

Lawrence held regular talks with Justin Rees as the Australian looked to complete a deal for the club.

And that ultimately led to Lawrence being handed a place in the consortium himself.

“As things were progressing I was so delighted when Justin came on the scene and that there was light at the end of the tunnel,” said Lawrence.

“We formed a good relationship and I helped to try and guide him along the way with bits and pieces.

“The relationship was strong, we spoke about it and I decided it was a good idea to join.”

Lawrence place in the consortium was announced during the club’s event at the Cliffs Pavilion on Thursday night.

And, speaking on stage, Rees revealed how influential Lawrence had been in his own arrival at Roots Hall.

Rees said: "I may not have gone through with the deal without Tom. He gave me the confidence and he's the right person to be with us."
