WHITE Ensign youngster Austin Smart is keen to continue what has already been a memorable season.

The 17-year-old was part of the Barking Abbey side which made it through to the third round of the FA Youth Cup before narrowly losing to Millwall.

And the defender is now enjoying sampling men’s football for the first time with Ensign.

“Playing in the Essex Senior League at 17-years-old I have gained a lot of experience and learned so much already,” said Smart.

“One day I would like to push on and get an opportunity to play full time football.

“I am currently pushing towards that week in week out and I’m enjoying it.”

Smart scored his first senior goal for Ensign in last month’s 2-1 win against Hullbridge Sports.

And it was the latest in a long line of memorable moments.

“By playing my college football at Barking Abbey and getting through to the third round proper of the FA Youth Cup at Millwall and making it to the national cup final with the Essex county team it has already been a great season,” said Smart.

“I would like to push on even more and finish the season with White Ensign in a good position.”

Ensign, who are 16th in the standings, host third placed Woodford Town at Burroughs Park on Wednesday night.

And Smart will again look forward to taking to the field alongside his team-mates.

“The lads are a great bunch and have really looked after me,” said Smart.

“I’m the youngest in the squad and the management team have really given me confidence by giving me the playing time that they have done.

“They’ve been so supportive.”

Smart joined Ensign from Buckhurst Hill back in November.

And he is certain it has been the right move to progress his career.

“I was at Buckhurst Hill the start of the season and started off well,” said Smart.

“Unfortunately I gained an injury which put me back and I struggled to make my way back into the squad.

“I made the decision to leave and join White Ensign and I am very happy with my decision.”
