KEVIN Maher had words of praise for Adam Crowther and Danny Waldron after both netted their first goals for Southend United in Tuesday night’s 2-1 win at Maidenhead.

Centre-back Crowther headed Blues in front in the first half at York Road.

And Shrimpers boss Maher was happy to see the defender work his way onto the score-sheet having gone close in his previous outings.

“Crowths is a threat and we knew that,” said Maher.

“We thought we needed someone who was going to attack the ball from set pieces in the box and he’s done it.

“I’m delighted for him too because he’s come close a couple of times and kept going.”

Crowther’s goal came in his fifth appearance since signing from King’s Lynn Town while Waldron’s was in his fourth game after coming to the club from Rushall Olympic.

The striker made sure of the three points for the Shrimpers by scoring with a right footed shot which flew into the bottom left hand corner of the net.

And Maher is certain the goal will be a big boost for the forward.

“I’m delighted for him,” said Maher.

“Cards has done brilliantly for the goal I think.

“Danny has reacted and slotted it away really well.

“We’ve been in enough situations like that recently and we haven’t taken them.

“But he’s done that and credit to him because he’s found the corner.

“Coming into full-time football takes time sometimes.

“It takes time to get up to speed and to get up to the speed and intensity we play at.

“We thought it was right to give him a start tonight after seeing him in training yesterday.

“His finishing was good so it felt right and hopefully that’s him up and running now.”
