SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher is not fazed by his side’s poor recent record against Aldershot Town.

The Shrimpers have failed to beat the Shots in the five National League clashes between the two teams.

But Maher is only focusing on this weekend’s game at Roots Hall.

“We just want to win the next game and that’s all we think about,” said Maher.

“It doesn’t matter who it’s against or any previous games.

“They’re a good side who cause teams problem with what they’ve got going forward but we’ll be ready for Saturday.”

Blues got back to winning ways with a 2-1 victory at Maidenhead United on Tuesday night.

And Maher felt it was a crucial three points for the Shrimpers who now sit 18th in the standings.

“The result was important and the performance was pretty good too,” said Maher.

“It’s always a tough place to go and it’s always a tight game.

“We had to dig in at the end and it was nice to get three points on board.”

The victory kept the Shrimpers above the relegation zone on goal difference.

And Maher knows it is still extremely tight towards the bottom of the table.

“It’s really tight,” said the Blues boss.

“All we can focus on is our next game and give everything we’ve got to try and get a result.

“You can’t affect anyone else so there’s no point worrying about other results.

“You have to get to a certain number of points yourself in each game and see where it takes you.”

The Shrimpers will be looking to add to their tally against fifth placed Aldershot tomorrow.

But Maher knows Tommy Widdrington’s team will be tough to beat.

“Tommy has a done a brilliant job there and they’ve got some very good players, especially in attacking areas,” said Maher.

“They’ve scored lots of goals and they’re a real threat.

“They got a good result the other night, beating Barnet, and I think it be will be a good game.

“It’s two teams who want to play the right way and win games.”

The Shrimpers have skipper Nathan Ralph available again after he served a one-match suspension but Gus Scott-Morriss remains a doubt with the knee problem which also forced him to miss out against Maidenhead.

“The swelling is coming down on his knee,” said Maher.

“That’s good news but we’ll see how it is.”

Scott-Morriss was replaced by Jason Demetriou at right-back on Tuesday night.

And Maher was impressed with his performance.

“He’s got the nous and know-how and the energy as well,” said Maher.

“He didn’t stop and that’s without him having started since October, November time.

“To come in and do that was unbelievable but it wasn’t a surprise.”
