SOUTHEND United stalwart Jason Demetriou is relishing every second of lining up for the Shrimpers – six years after fearing he would never play again.

Demetriou looks set for his third start in succession when Blues host Altrincham at Roots Hall tonight.

And the 36-year-old is loving still be able to line up for Kevin Maher’s side.

“I think that’s why I enjoy it so much now because I thought that was me done a few years ago,” said Demetriou.

“I was told that could be that and it was in my head that every game or every season could be my last.

“I’m absolutely buzzing to still be fit now and be able to roll out when I need to because I did fear the worst.

“I had two operations in quick succession and the surgeon told me this would be the last one.

“But luckily with the right people around me and the right advice I’m still playing on.”

Demetriou has helped the Shrimpers win their last two matches after stepping in for the injured Gus Scott-Morriss.

And he is ready to go again for this evening’s clash at Roots Hall “I feel alright to be fair,” said Demetriou.

“In this team it’s easier to play because we have a lot of the ball and it’s something I thrive on.

“I’ve enjoyed it and hopefully I can keep rolling out when I need to.”

Demetriou will certainly be needed again tonight and will be looking to reap the rewards of his work on the training ground.

“The training we do is intense and if you don’t play you train harder,” said Demetriou.

“You have to stay professional but the training is good so when the boys come in they’re fit and ready.

“It doesn’t matter how old you are, it helps you when you need to play.”

But Demetriou is finding ways to adapt his game.

“Years ago I’d probably fly forward for every attack but now I do pick and choose a bit more,” said Demetriou.

“It’s learning how to manage the game.

“You do feel sore but your body gets used to it.”

Blues head into tonight’s game sitting 16th in the National League table.

And Demetriou expects it to be another stern test against Altrincham.

“They’re lively and got a good front three or four they leave up,” said Demetriou.

“It’s similar to the weekend and there are some good teams in this league so you have to stay switched on.

“But on our day we’re a match for anyone and we know we should be up there too.

“We’ll prepare the best we can and we’re looking forward to it.”
