CALLUM Powell has labelled leaving Southend United as one of the toughest decisions of his career.

The speedy striker has joined Braintree Town after failing to agree a new deal with the Shrimpers.

But Powell insists he leaves Roots Hall holding no hard feelings against Blues.

“We couldn’t come to agreement and that forced my hand but I can see it from both sides after the injury I had,” said Powell.

“I’m honestly not bitter at all about it and I’m a firm believer in everything happens for a reason.

“I love everything about Southend United and the magnitude of the club made leaving one of the toughest decisions I’ve ever had to make.

“But I think we’ll both look back and agree it was the right thing to do.”

Powell scored 12 goals in 74 appearances for Blues after signing in January 2022.

And the 28-year-old says he will reflect on his time at Roots Hall with fond memories.

“It’s honestly been a rollercoaster but the tough times brought us closer together,” said Powell.

“I’ve made so many close friends during my time there and I’m certain the club will come out the other side and do well because of the quality they’ve got.

“I’ve spoken to Kev (Maher) and Daz (Currie) to wish them well and I look forward to playing against them next season.

But Powell is now firmly focused on Braintree and playing regularly again after the knee injury he suffered last season.

“Staying in the National League was important for me and I’m really excited to have joined Braintree,” said Powell.

“Angelo (Harrop) really sold the project to me and the part I would play.

“I need to be playing every week after missing 90 per cent of last season and I can’t wait to get started.”
