SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher was pleased to see both his forwards firing at Canvey Island tonight.

Harry Cardwell cancelled out Conor Huble’s opener for the hosts with a well-taken header before Josh Walker scored from the penalty spot to secure victory for the visitors.

And Maher was happy to see the strikers hitting the back of the net.

“It was nice for the two forwards to score,” said Maher.

“Josh earnt the penalty himself and I’m pleased he took it.

“I know it’s only pre-season but for him to get off the mark is nice.

“Cards got a great header as well and it was nice for him to get another goal.”

Cardwell was also on target for the Shrimpers at Great Wakering Rovers on Saturday.

And Maher was happy to see his squad build on their opening friendly at Burroughs Park.

“We’re pleased to get another game under our belts and a few more minutes into the players,” said Maher.

“A lot of them got 60 minutes and some got 45 but it’s nice to come away with everyone being OK which is important.”

Maher was also able to get midfielder James Morton and striker Danny Waldron onto the pitch for the first time this pre-season.

And that was another highlight for the Shrimpers chief.

“It was important for them and it’s important for them all to get their minutes built up,” said Maher.

“It takes a while to get going but we reacted the right way to going behind.”

Blues will now look to build on the back to back wins when they head to Bishop’s Stortford on Saturday.

And Maher is hopeful goalkeeper Collin Andeng Ndi and wing-back Jack Bridge could both be fit enough to feature for the first time this summer.

“We’ll hopefully know more towards the end of the week,” said Maher.

“I’d like to think they might be close for Bishop’s Stortford.

“We want to start getting them minutes too.

“They’re OK but it’s just precautionary we can’t risk them.”
