SOUTHEND United legend Steve Tilson has welcomed news the Shrimpers have been saved.

The consortium headed up by Justin Rees have now completed their takeover after months of talks.

And former Blues boss Tilson is relieved he will be still be able to attend matches at Roots Hall.

“It’s brilliant news,” said Tilson.

“I did always think it would get sorted and that the club would be OK but the longer it went on you do start worry.

“It’s been a tough time for everyone and hopefully now this can signal the end to all of those problems.”

Tilson has been involved in more Blues matches than anyone else in the club’s 118 year history.

The 57-year-old, who also grew up supporting the Shrimpers, made 275 appearances as a player before taking charge of 358 games as manager during seven years in charge.

And he believes Blues can now enjoy a successful season.

“I really think they can push for promotion this season,” said Tilson.

“Kev (Maher) has done a great job there and got a good team together.

“They would’ve made the play-offs last season it wasn’t for the points deduction and I’m sure they will be up there again.

“I’ll definitely be along to watch too.”
