SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher believes the consortium’s takeover should be considered among the most important days in the club’s history.

The group of businessmen headed up by Justin Rees, officially completed their take over of the Shrimpers this afternoon.

And Maher instantly spoke of his delight at the deal being done.

“More than anything it’s a relief,” said the Blues head coach.

“It’s probably quite emotional for everyone involved and I’m delighted for everyone connected with the cub.

“It’s definitely one of the most important days for the club.”

Maher made 454 appearances for Blues as a player before spending three seasons as the club’s under 21 team coach.

He was then named the Shrimpers head coach in October 2021 and has since guided the club through the toughest time of their history.

But Maher will now face far less hurdles to clear and praised the consortium for their perseverance in getting the deal done.

“We’re incredibly grateful to the consortium for sticking at it and for all the work they have done to get here,” said Maher.

“Getting to know them, they care for the football club and without them it might not have got to this stage.

“It’s not just the financial help they’ve given the club it’s also the determination they’ve shown along the way.”

The consortium have pumped close to £4million into the Shrimpers since Christmas to keep the club alive, And Maher is thrilled Blues are now able to kick on.

“I think everyone to do with the club deserves this and the staff deserve to be able to work properly without the constraints which have been there for the past three years” said Maher.

“It’s been incredibly difficult for everyone.”

That includes the Shrimpers supporters and Maher is also delighted for the club’s fanbase.

“The numbers we get are incredible and this is a club built by its fans,” said Maher.

“Every time I speak to people it’s about the club being in their family so for them to have a club that can look forwards rather than trying to get through problems all the time is brilliant.

“I’m sure they will keep coming out in big numbers to support us too.

“But it's about putting all the right steps in place now so that if and when we get success we can sustain it.”
