SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher says his side’s trip to Ireland will be hugely significant for the forthcoming National League season.

Blues head to Dublin this morning aiming to step up their preparations for the campaign ahead.

And Maher believes it will be a crucial period for his players who will also face Ballyfermot United in a pre-season friendly on Tuesday night.

“We’ll be able to get a lot of work in out there and some double and triple training sessions during the week,” said Maher.

“There’s a lot of detail involved with this part of pre-season including set pieces and there’s a lot we need to work on.

“We’re probably a touch behind on where we want to be and a touch short on players too but this is a big week for us.

“It’s one we’re looking forward to and one the lads deserve too.”

Blues will make the trip after being beaten 3-1 at home to Gillingham on Saturday afternoon.

And Maher is expecting another stern test against Ballyfermot who line up in the Leinster Senior League.

"You’ll always get a competitive game out there," said Maher.

"They’re in their season and the teams you play will be fit and ready.

"It will be a tough week work-rate wise for the players and it's brilliant.

"I know we’ll take fans away with us and the number of supporters we get is just brilliant."
