SOUTHEND United complete their pre-season preparations at Chelmsford City on Saturday.
The Clarets finished second in National League South last season before being beaten in the play-offs.
And Blues boss Kevin Maher expects City to impress again this term.
“They did ever so well last year and had a great season,” said Maher.
“They’ve lost one or two (players) this summer but I’m sure they will be really competitive again and have another good season.
“It will be a good game this weekend and it’s a local one the fans can get to easy enough.”
The friendly at Melbourne Park is the first since the Shrimpers returned from a four day training camp in Ireland.
But defender Adam Crowther (groin) and midfielder Noor Husin (shin) will again be missing for Blues.
“Adam and Noor have done loads of work in Ireland and Adam will probably join in training next week,” said Maher.
“Noor is a bit behind him but hopefully he’ll be stepping things up next week too.”
Jason Demetriou will also not feature for Blues but the Echo understands the defender remains in talks with the club and Maher is keen for him to remain at Roots Hall
