SOUTHEND United skipper Nathan Ralph cannot wait to focus purely on football this season.

As club captain, Ralph has endured more problems than most during the Shrimpers’ extreme off-field struggles.

But, with the consortium now officially in control of the club, Ralph is excited to see what Kevin Maher’s side can achieve this season.

“It’s been a difficult few years but to have this more positive feeling around the whole place is brilliant now,” said Ralph.

“On the pitch it’s still been positive for the last couple of years and we’ve played well but we want to go and build on that now.

“We have our own in-house targets and our own standards but we want to keep on getting better.

“It’s exciting and we can’t wait to see where this takes us.”

The Shrimpers kick off their National League campaign against York City at Roots Hall this weekend.

And Ralph knows the Minstermen will be difficult to beat.

“They’re a good team and they’ve signed more good players this summer,” said the defender.

“We know there are no easy games in this league and whoever you play it’s going to be difficult.

“York will be tough but we’re at home and we’ll be looking to get the three points.”

The Shrimpers have worked hard throughout pre-season to prepare for this weekend’s opener.

And Ralph is pleased with how the warm up matches have gone.

“The off season was a bit longer this year so getting back for pre-season, seeing everyone again and getting the footballs out was brilliant,” said the 31-year-old.

“Everyone has worked really hard and it’s been good.

“There’s been a real buzz around the place and now we can’t wait to get going on Saturday in front of what I’m sure will be a really good crowd.”

Blues will be looking to give the fans plenty to cheer on Saturday.

And Ralph is certain the squad have been boosted by their pre-season trip to Dublin.

“It was great for us and it was good to have a change of scenery,” said Ralph.

“The facilities were really good out there and being together like that helped the team bond even more.”
