SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher felt the Shrimpers’ 1-1 draw with York City was a fair reflection of the game.

Blues took an early lead thanks to a well-taken header from Gus Scott-Morriss before Lenell John-Lewis equalised for the Minstermen five minutes from time.

And Maher thought a point was about right for both teams.

“A draw is probably a fair result,” said the Shrimpers head coach.

“It was a really good start from us.

“We had them under pressure and backed off into their box.

“We asked them a couple of questions and it was pleasing to then get the goal.

“We wanted to build on that but we got sloppy on the ball at times which allowed them a bit of momentum.”

That eventually allowed York to secure a share of the spoils.

And Maher feels the Shrimpers are still working towards where they need to be.

“We’re a couple of weeks away from where we want to be,” said Maher.

“The lads looked fit but it’s more about the numbers.

“Danny Waldron had a calf problem this week, Crowther has been injured too and we’re bringing them on.

“We’re a bit light on numbers.

“They’re bringing quality of the bench and can really affect games.”

York’s goalscorer John-Lewis came off the bench to work his way onto the score-sheet.

But Maher was frustrated by the manner of the equaliser.

“It’s disappointing to concede from a set piece but they’re a good team who will cause a lot of teams problems,” said Maher.

“They will be at the right end of the table.”
