GUS Scott-Morriss admitted Saturday’s season opener was about more than just the football for Southend United.

Blues drew 1-1 with York City at Roots Hall in the first fixture of the National League campaign.

But Scott-Morriss – who netted Southend’s goal - was eager to look at the bigger picture and the positivity which has spread since the consortium officially took control of the club.

“It was more than just a football game for the fans today,” said Scott-Morriss.

“It’s about them having their club back.

“They’ll probably go away feeling a little bit disappointed about the football but at the same time it was more than that.

“It really felt like there was a feel-good factor which has to be a good thing moving forward.”

Blues looked set to kick off the campaign with a win when Scott-Morriss headed them in front after just 16 minutes.

However, Scott-Morriss thought the Shrimpers were second best for much of the afternoon.

“It was a fair result in the end but, fair play to York, I thought they were the better side,” said Scott-Morriss.

“I don’t think we were at our best and we were quite wasteful with the football.

“We found it hard at times but we started the game well and when we scored early on we wanted to kick on.

“It went the other way though and sometimes you have to give credit to the opposition.

“They’re a good side, hey were pushing and probably got what they deserved in the end.”

But Scott-Morriss was frustrated with the manner of York’s goal.

“It was disappointing for us that their goal came from a set-piece as we pride ourselves on being good at defending them,” said the wing-back.

“It happens and we have to move on.

“A point on the opening day isn’t a bad result.”

“It’s a unique game having six weeks to build up for it but we’ve got 45 to go and we won’t look too much into it.

“We know where we need to be better and hopefully on Saturday we’ll put it right.”

Blues head to Hartlepool United this weekend.

And Scott-Morriss will go into the game having already scored his first goal of the season.

“It’s always nice to get the tally up and running,” said Scott-Morriss.

“I like to try and get the first goal as quickly as possible and then try and build from there.

“It’s nice because I pride myself on scoring goals.”
