YORK City boss Adam Hinshelwood was disappointed to not pick up more than a point against Southend United on Saturday.

A late leveller from Minstermen substitute Lenell John-Lewis saw the National League opener end 1-1 at Roots Hall.

But Hinshelwood thought York could have come out on top.

"I'm a bit disappointed we haven't come away with all three points," Hinshelwood told the club's YouTube channel.

"I thought we had some really good chances.

"I remember Cam John's one six yards out and I think you've got to put everything through it.

"He couldn't make clean contact on the ball but overall I thought the second half response was excellent."

And that saw City fight back from a goal down.

"We played with a lot of purpose and belief but we weren't quite clinical enough," said Hinshelwood.

"I think it's a sign of how far we've come as a team that we've travelled away to Southend and we've come away a bit disappointed with a point."

But Hinshelwood also stressed it was the strength of his squad which saw get on top in the second half.

"One thing we've got this year is a good squad," said Hinshelwood.

"The squad could be the difference, especially with the five subs this year and they had a big impact .

"The best squad will finish at the top of the table this year not necessarily the best team.
