GUS Scott-Morriss continued his stunning goalscoring start to the season despite an extreme fatigue factor.

The in-form right-wing-back headed home Jack Wood’s cross four minutes into stoppage time to secure Southend United a 2-2 draw with Dagenham & Redbridge.

And Scott-Morriss, who has now scored four goals in five games, admitted he found the Shrimpers’ second match in the space of just three days tough going.

“That was one of the hardest games I’ve played in a long time,” said Scott-Morriss.

“I think in the Barnet game we really gave it our all and it’s such a quick turnaround.

“Playing such top opposition like Barnet on Saturday meant we felt it today and I certainly did.

“That’s the most leggy I’ve ever felt on a football pitch but I’m just delighted we got something from the game, give something for the fans to cheer and come away with a point at least.”

Blues, who now sit 14th in the National League table, had earlier taken the lead with Oli Coker firing home from close range.

But Kevin Maher’s side were unable to build on going in front.

“It just seems at the moment that we can’t put our foot on the throat of the opposition and finish games off,” said Scott-Morriss.

“We seem to start well and get a goal ahead but never really capitalise on that good start.

“That’s something we need to improve on.”

Scott-Morriss is again likely to be at the forefront where that is concerned.

And he is relishing his start to the season.

“It’s part of my job and I pride myself on scoring goals,” said Scott-Morriss.

“I know it’s a shock to some but hopefully that’s something I bring to the team.

“I’m sometimes not the prettiest on the eye but I know I’ll get in the box and score you goals.”

Scott-Morriss did just that at the death against Dagenham.

And the 27-year-old felt the timing of the equaliser again showed the Shrimpers’ never say die attitude.

“The one thing you can give us is that we never give up,” said Scott-Morriss.

“Whether that’s one per cent left in the tank or everything, we will never give up at this football club.

“We’ve shown that throughout the years.

“We could easily have left the club and it could have been gone but we will never ever give up in that dressing room.

“Whether that’s when we’re losing a game of football or we’re fighting something else we will never give up.”

That spirit rescued the Shrimpers a share of the spoils in front of a packed Roots Hall.

And Scott-Morriss was thrilled to hit the back of the net.

“I was just ecstatic to see it go in,” said the wing-back.

“I’m just riding a wave at the moment.

“I know everyone is laughing and saying I should play up front and stuff like that but I’m just riding the wave because I know bad times are never too far round the corner in football.

“I’m delighted to get a point and I think we deserved it in the end too.”
