SOUTHEND United midfielder James Morton is keen to let his football do the talking against Sutton United tomorrow.

Morton was voted man of the match by the club’s supporters following an impressive performance in the centre of the park against Eastleigh on Tuesday.

But the 25-year-old remains eager to quietly go about his business.

“I guess it’s nice on a personal note (to be man of the match), “said Morton.

“To be honest I don’t really look at that much and I’m not on social media.

“Quite a few years ago now I felt I was wasting my time on it and just got rid of it.

“I haven’t missed it since ether.

“In football you get a lot of good and bad things on there but I keep things to myself and keep quiet.

“That’s the way I like to do it and just want my football to do the talking rather than anything else.”

However ,Morton’s impressive display against Eastleigh certainly got people talking.

And the midfielder believes he is benefiting from having played back to back games for the first time this season.

“ I’ve played the last couple of games now which helps with your rhythm,” said Morton.

“I’m grateful I feel like I’ve been put in a position which suits me and I’ve been given the freedom to play my best too.

“I’m doing what I’m good at and that’s trying to get on the ball and keep it ticking over for the team.

“There’s a lot of work out of position in the defensive side of things too but I enjoyed it on Tuesday.

“Hopefully I can back it up on Saturday now.”

Morton again looks set to start in place of the injured Cav Miley.

And, despite feeling sad for his fellow midfielder, Morton is determined to make the most of the opportunities coming his way.

“It’s unfortunate for Cav,” said Morton.

“I love the guy and it’s unfortunate he’s injured for this long.

“We’ll miss him as a team on and off the pitch in terms of what he brings us but I guess things like that happen and you have to take your opportunity.

“I’m trying to do that at the moment but I’m nowhere near thinking I’ve arrived or anything like that.

“I just want to try and keep playing well.”

That quest will continue this weekend and Morton cannot wait to be back in front of the fans at Roots Hall.

“When I first came here it was a massive eye-opener in terms of how big the club was,” said Morton.

“The supporters are so good.

“They’ve been through so much and the fact they’re still so behind us is brilliant.

“ I hope they’re enjoying it and we want to make them happy.

“Hopefully we can again on Saturday.”
