SOUTHEND Saxons head to Amersham & Chiltern tomorrow looking to build on their opening day success.

Southend started life in Regional One South East with a 54-37 win against Bedford Athletic.

But Saxons co-captain Ben Lloyd still believes there is plenty to work on.

“It was good to get off to a winning start in this new league but there were definitely some things for us to improve on,” said Lloyd.

“Bedford were a good test and more than anything they showed us that every team in this league will keep playing all the way through.

“Everyone’s going to have their own threats.

“It was a great marker for us and we’ll be looking to tighten up our performance now going forward.”

Southend have now triumphed 27 times in succession.

But Lloyd insists the unbeaten run is not at the forefront of the squad’s mind.

“It’s a brilliant record but not really something we think too much about,” said the fly-half.

“More than ever we have to focus on the challenge of each week because if we’re off the boil, teams in this league will punish us.

“Wins come as a result of a solid performance.

“We know there’s a lot more potential in us and we’re looking to keep improving this week.”

And Lloyd is expecting another stern test.

“We played them in the Papa Johns Cup last season but I’m expecting them to be a much improved side from that day,” said Lloyd.

“ With all of their players available and a handful of new signings over the off season, especially at home, they’ll be fired up to get us back for that cup victory.”

Elsewhere this weekend, Westcliff host Chelmsford and Rochford Hundred go to Woodford in Regional Two Anglia.

In Counties One Essex, Basildon are at home to Mavericks.

In Counties Two Essex, Canvey host Kelvedon & Feering, Billericay go to Kings Cross Steelers and South Woodham Ferrers entertain Stanford le Hope.
