SOUTHEND United ladies side went top of the ERWFL Division One South table after a 2-1 victory against Colney Heath.

Hannah Smith scored twice for the Shrimpers who came back from a goal down to secure their fourth win in five games.

And head coach April Smith was delighted to see Blues get their own back having been beaten by their title rivals just a fortnight ago.

“It was tough but the girls worked hard for the three points and it was fully deserved,” said Smith.

We were cautious going into this game after losing away to them only two weeks earlier.

“They gave us some problems tactically and it was pretty cagey in the first 45 minutes.

“However, we made a few tweaks, started playing more on the front foot and positively and the girls were rewarded.

“It’s always nice when your new signings are scoring too.

“Hannah’s been a great addition to the squad and brings a different kind of quality to us.”

The Shrimpers now have 12 points from four games so far this season.

And Smith is happy with how the opening few fixtures have gone.

“I’m pleased with how it’s going so far,” said Smith.

“The girls have come back with a real hunger and desire to improve on the success of last season.

“Going over to our new training facility at Deanes, has had an impact on the squad already.

“I’m asking more questions of them both technically and tactically but everyone is really taking the messages on board.

“There’s a real togetherness to succeed this year and I hope I can help them do that.”

But Smith is keen to keep the good results coming, starting with Sunday’s FA Cup clash at Barking.

“It’s really important that we keep momentum going,” said Smith.

“We know we’ve got a tough game Sunday against Barking who are currently in the league above so this will give a marker for where we’re at as we’re looking to get promotion this season.

“We’d love to see even more support from the fans too.

“We all get excited when we see people turn up in their shirts at Garons.”
