SOUTHEND United head coach Kevin Maher has been awarded a testimonial year by the Shrimpers.
Tuesday night’s clash at Wealdstone was Maher’s 600th associated with the club.
And Maher’s loyalty has now been rewarded, much to the delight of Blues’ chief executive Tom Lawrence.
“The board of the club had no hesitation in awarding Kev a testimonial for his tremendous service to the club,” said Lawrence.
“Kev has been, and continues to be, a brilliant servant to the club and he has stood by the club through thick and thin.
“He has earned the testimonial and we all look forward to seeing what programme of events Kev’s Testimonial Committee come up with, which will no doubt culminate with a game at Roots Hall.”
Maher made 454 appearances for the Shrimpers as a player during a 10 year spell which saw him skipper the side to back to back promotions plus victory against Manchester United in the League Cup.
The 47-year-old lined up in midfield between 1998 and 2008 after first being signed by Alvin Martin and also spent time as the club’s under 21 team boss before returning as head coach in October 2021.
Maher has now overseen 146 games in charge of the club and is honoured to have been awarded a testimonial year.
“It’s an incredible privilege to be awarded a testimonial year and I’m grateful to COSU (Custodians of Southend United) and everyone at the club for making it happen,” said Maher.
“Southend United has been a long part of my life as a player, a coach and now manager.
“The fans have been brilliant to me and there’s a lot of people who have supported me along the way.
“I’m looking forward to celebrating with friends, family and supporters with what is being lined-up.”
Maher was also handed the freedom of the city back in March after guiding the Shrimpers through the toughest time in their history last season.
