SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher will consider his defensive options closely ahead of Saturday’s clash with Gateshead at Roots Hall.

Shrimpers skipper Nathan Ralph will miss the game with a one match ban while fellow defender Harry Taylor is doubtful with a hamstring problem.

But Maher did not give much away in his pre-match press conference.

“We'll wait and see,” said Maher.

“People will watch interviews so I don't want to say too much but Harry has tweaked his hamstring so we'll see where he's at."

Joe Gubbins looks set to come in for the suspended Ralph.

And Maher admitted he was trying to bring in defensive reinforcements.

"It's pretty obvious, depending on how bad Harry is, that it's a situation we have to assess,” said Maher.

“With Ralphy it's not ideal but it's something we'll look at and come up with a plan on Saturday."

However, Maher stressed no new signings were close at this stage.

“Not right now, no,” said the Blues boss.

“Even if there was I probably wouldn't say in all honesty.

“We are working and we'd like a body or two in before the weekend but we'll have to wait and see if we can do that."

Full-back George Wind could provide another option if needed for the Shrimpers.

And Maher confirmed the summer signing was in contention for his first start.

“It's been difficult in terms of the minutes he's been able to get so far,” said Maher.

“Obviously Gus has been doing brilliantly but George has trained really well.

“He's someone who has to come into our thinking for Saturday."
