JASON Demetriou has been named Southend United’s new chief scout.

The 36-year-old revealed last month he would be leaving Roots Hall after eight years at the club as a player.

But he has now been kept on in a new role, much to the delight of Blues boss Kevin Maher.

“It was important that we kept someone with Jason’s knowledge and understanding of the club around,” said Maher.

“We lost people this summer with experience, so it was important that we kept some about.

“Jason’s going into a coaching career that he wants to start off and we felt there was a need for an area that he can add to.

“I’m delighted to have him back on board and he will be great to work with the players at the right time and also in the scouting side of things as well.”

Demetriou joined the Shrimpers in 2016 and went on to make 260 appearances for the club.

The former Cyprus international lined up in defence, midfield and in goal for Blues and also had a short stint as caretaker manager.

Last season he combined playing with coaching and will now assist both Maher and head of football John Still in player recruitment and match preparation.

And Maher feels Demetriou has a big part to play.

“It’s important he comes in when needed to coach, whether that’s with individuals as well, but also to have someone who can watch opposition to have a look at what we’re going to be facing and work with Lewis (Gates) on the analysis said Maher.

“I’m going to get him out watching players and games as well. He’ll have good knowledge of how we work and what we look for, so he’ll help on that side.

“He’ll go out and build good relationships with academies, especially local ones, to hopefully be the first in the queue when the good players become available.”
