SOUTHEND United legend Ian Benjamin believes the Shrimpers must bolster their strike-force to turn their season around.

Benjamin was back at Roots Hall for Saturday’s 2-0 defeat against Maidenhead United which made it just one win in six games for Kevin Maher’s side.

And Benjamin – who himself lined up in attack during his playing days – feels Blues need more attacking options.

“There is still time to put a run together but it looks as though Kev needs another centre forward,” said Benjamin.

“He needs someone with a bit of presence who can get hold of the ball and physically hold off defenders.

“That creates room for the other attacking players in the team but when I saw the article about important players leaving and being injured, I had a feeling that it could be a tough season for the club.”

The Shrimpers – who sit 16th in the standings – are readjusting following the departures of defender Ollie Kensdale and striker Harry Cardwell.

But Benjamin does not understand Cardwell’s decision to join Forest Green Rovers from Roots Hall.

“I do not understand when players leave to go to a club in the same league , no matter how much money they are offered, so it was a bigger blow that Cardwell joined Forest Green,” said Benjamin.

“A league club fair enough but not the same level.

“Getting top players at this moment is hard, so King Kev might have to make do with what he has got and I hope that they can gel together.

“But I would want a lot more from the strikers than what I saw on Saturday although the service when it did come was not the best.”

However, Benjamin feels the forwards can also help themselves.

“The movement of the strikers could have been better but I respect that they have not played together a lot,” said Benjamin.

“Hopefully that will improve in time.”
