EASTLEIGH manager Kelvin Davis was hurt by his side’s FA Cup defeat to Southend United.

An injury time effort from Bim Pepple meant it was the Shrimpers who advanced into the first round of the competition.

And Davis was disappointed by the manner of the defeat.

“We felt we did enough to see ourselves through but we didn’t take the chances that were there for us and when you concede a late goal in the manner we did it hurts twice as much," Davis told the club's YouTube channel.

“Exiting the FA Cup before you feel like you’ve even got started is disappointing and we won’t be emulating what was done here last season which is a shame.”

Eastleigh reached the third round of the FA Cup last season before being beaten by Newport County who advanced to take on Manchester United.

However, there will be no such excitement for the Spitfires this season after they failed to score against the Shrimpers.

Tyrese Shade was denied by Blues goalkeeper Collin Andeng Ndi when clean through on goal.

But Davis thought Harry Taylor could have been red carded for bringing down Chris Maguire before the ball rolled through to Shade.

“I asked the fourth official because I was a little bit confused myself,” said Davis.

“The defender was the last man and he’s brought Mags down.

“Ty then went on and whether that’s in his mind thinking about a red card and if it might get pulled back he doesn’t get the finish we would like and he would like.

“Ultimately a yellow card is shown and we carry on but it was a chance missed.”

And that proved costly late on as Eastleigh goalkeeper Joe McDonnell somehow let a low shot from Pepple past him.

“To not keep a clean sheet is disappointing and it was a defendable moment too,” said Davis.

“It was one attacking player against three plus Joe in goal so it was disappointing.

“It was a goal I wouldn’t foresee us conceding.”
