SOUTHEND United midfielder Oli Coker wants to become more of a creative force, starting with tomorrow’s clash at Aldershot Town.

Coker ended last season with six goals and four assists.

But, having now recovered from an ankle injury, the 21-year-old is determined to start posing more problems for opposing teams.

“I just want to build on last season really and get as many games in as possible,” said Coker.

“I know I’ve missed a few through injury now but I want to get my numbers up.

“I want to get assists and goals and I want to get as many of them as possible.

“The position I play I do feel I need to get my numbers up and goals is a big part of that.

“Every team needs a centre mid who can get goals and hopefully I can get more under my belt.”

Coker, who has scored once so far this season, has started the last two matches after coming back from the injury he sustained in the fifth match of the campaign.

The midfielder has helped the Shrimpers win 1-0 away from home in both outings.

But he knows it will be tough going at Aldershot tonight.

“It’s another tough game,” said Coker.

“It’s tough against anyone in this league but we’re ready for the test.

“We’ve got some confidence back and hopefully we’ll get the win again this evening.”

Blues go into the clash 15th in the National League standings, one place higher than the Shots.

And Coker will again take great pride in lining up for his hometown club.

“It’s brilliant,” said Coker.

“The home crowd and the away fans we get, even at Rochdale on Saturday, is ridiculous really.

“It’s brilliant to play for them every week.

“I was eight when I first joined and I’m 21 now so it’s really good. It means a lot for me to play for Southend.”
