ALDERSHOT Town boss Tommy Widdrington believes both team will point to a lack of quality in the final third after Wednesday night’s 0-0 draw with Southend United.
The Shots defended well to secure a share of the spoils.
But Widdrington admitted both sides will have wanted more in attack.
“It was competitive and honest but both teams will probably say there wasn’t enough quality in the final third of the pitch in terms of the attacking sense,” Widdrington told the club’s YouTube channel.
“You look back at it and it seems a long time ago now but we should’ve scored after about 40 seconds.
“I don’t why we didn’t but that was the best chance of the game.”
However, Widdrington was still pleased to pick up a point.
“It’s a point gained at the end of the day,” said Widdrington.
“When we looked at Southend coming into this we saw a team very similar to ours.
“The difference at this moment in time is the platform they start their attack from is a little bit more regular for them.
“They really know what they’re doing.
“Their patterns of play are obvious but they’re difficult to stop and they’ve got good quality all over the pitch.
“They’ve got more experience than us too.
“They’ve got experience of the level and some of those lads have played a lot of EFL football.”
That was not enough to secure victory for the Shrimpers.
But Widdrington, who had a short spell as Blues assistant manager back in 2010, was disappointed Aldershot were forced back for large spells of the game.
“We’ve occupied our own third too much and more than I’d wanted to but that’s credit to the opposition,” said Widdrington.
“To a man we kept digging in and kept trying to protect our goal.
“In fairness Marcus (Dewhurst) hasn’t had a great deal to do.
“He’s taken a few from long distance but both teams will look back and think they need more quality in the final third.”
