SOUTHEND United legend Chris Powell said he was 'humbled' to receive his MBE.
Powell was honoured for services to football by the Princess Royal after a ceremony at Windsor Castle.
And the former Shrimpers defender was incredibly grateful to be rewarded for his illustrious career.
"It was a honour to spend the day at Windsor Castle with my mum, my wife Sophia and our children to receive my MBE," said Powell.
"I would like to thank everyone who has helped me throughout my life and career.
"I am truly grateful and humbled."
Powell made 290 appearances for the Shrimpers between 1990 and 1996 before returning to Roots Hall as manager in January 2018.
Powell left his role in March 2019 and went on to become part of Gareth Southgate's England coaching team at Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup.
And the 55-year-old said the former manager would be remembered in future years as having done a “real solid job”.
“He introduced so many new things – he embraced the media, embraced the everyday supporter, and everyone felt part of England,” he continued.
“It didn’t end the way I’m sure Gareth wanted.
"But again, he got into a final by hook or by crook – we got there.
“We didn’t get over the line in two finals, but England became a force again.”
Regarding the new England manager, Thomas Tuchel, Powell said fans should “give him a chance” and “back him all the way”.
Asked about the importance of his work supporting grassroots football, Powell said: “I’ve always recognised that a football club is in the fabric of towns, of cities, and it’s not only when we play there every Saturday, but it’s about the wider community.
“It’s about the fans and engaging with them.
“People look up to us, people look up to players, look up to coaches and managers, and I’ve always felt it’s important to make sure that you’re part of that community.”
Powell played more than 700 matches during his career which included spells with Charlton Athletic who he also managed.
Charlton visit Roots Hall in the first round of the FA Cup this weekend.
And Powell is expecting an entertaining encounter.
“I think it’s going to be great,” said Powell.
“I’m sure the ground will be packed, the usual Southend support and Charlton will fill out the away end behind the goal too."
Powell won five England caps during his career and is currently assistant manager at Sheffield Wednesday.
He also appears as a commentator on the television series Ted Lasso.
