JAMES Morton is not getting carried away by his best ever run for Southend United.

The Shrimpers midfielder heads into Saturday's FA Cup clash against Charlton Athletic having played the entirety of the last four matches.

But Morton is only keen to focus on upcoming fixtures.

“I’m happy and it’s the first time I’ve done this run here but you just want to continue that and hopefully I can,” said Morton.

“The body feels good and I’m enjoying myself at the moment.

“But you’re only as good as your last game so I want to do well on Saturday and carry it on.”

Morton again looks set to start in a defensive midfield role for the Shrimpers this weekend.

And the 25-year-old is enjoying his position in front of the back three.

“I’ve really enjoyed it and it’s something that suits me more,” said Morton.

“When I first came in that was my role and there have been times I’ve had to adapt which is fine.

“Being a sitter is fine and maybe shows my qualities a bit more.

“I’m able to get on the ball, drop deeper and play forward which is what I like to do. I like to be in among building up the play and I’m really enjoying it.”

Morton also hopes to be able to enjoy taking on Charlton.

And he is keen to try and help the Shrimpers upset the odds.

“We’re really excited and we’d have fancied ourselves whoever we got,” said Morton.

“We’re on a good run so let’s go and do it.

“The pressure is on them which is helpful in a way so we can just go for it and have a bit more freedom.

“I guess individually you just want to show you can do it and do it again but we’ll just focus on trying to get an upset.”

Victory would see Blues work their way into the second round for the first time since 2018.

And Morton is eager to stay in the competition for as long as possible.

"My appreciation and respect for the FA Cup is massive,” said Morton.

“Growing up you always watch it at Wembley and, in terms of playing in it, I've always looked at it as an opportunity to go try and go further in the competition.

“You always look to play higher up against higher opposition and I want to go as far as I can."
