SOUTHEND United duo George Moncur and Danny Waldron are closing in on a return to action.

Shrimpers striker Waldron has been out since late August with a knee problem while Moncur has missed the last two games with a groin issue.

But Blues boss Maher confirmed both players have resumed aspects of training ahead of Saturday's FA Cup tie with Charlton Athletic at Roots Hall.

"They've done some training today and we'll have to see how they settle down after doing that," said Maher.

"We'll see if they can train again tomorrow but it will depend on how they are."

Maher opted to remain tight-lipped on whether or not on loan Lincoln City goalkeeper Zach Jeacock had been given permission to play by his parent club but the Blues boss did confirm Taylor Foran had returned to Bromley.

The defender made two appearances for the Shrimpers during his month long loan spell but has now headed back to the League Two club.

At the other end of the field, Maher must decide whether or not to start Macauley Bonne or Josh Walker alongside Bim Pepple in attack.

Bonne started against Tamworth last time out and Maher feels the forward is getting closer to his best.

"As a team you've got to work your socks off and that starts from the front," said Maher.

"Anything less than that won't be accepted.

"Macca did that Saturday and the more he keeps doing that than the goals will come.

"Without a pre-season he went into a lot of games he played in a row and it's tough when you haven't got your full work into you.

"He's getting that now and will get the benefits from that."

Bonne has failed to score in 11 appearances for Blues.
