AN unhappy Kevin Maher stressed he did not want Southend United to be labelled unlucky losers following their heartbreaking 4-3 defeat to Charlton Athletic at Roots Hall.

Addicks substitute Gassan Ahadme bagged a dramatic winning goal in the final seconds of extra time.

And Shrimpers boss Maher was clearly hurting at the final whistle.

“I hate losing and I hate losing in that manner, “said Maher.

“I hate pats on the back for being unlucky losers.

“I’m fuming because we’re out and the performance certainly didn’t deserve that.

“I hate it but when I do look back at it I’ll be proud of the players for how we played.

“We looked like the team who created more chances and I don’t think we’ve really been opened up. “

However, Blues still conceded four goals and Maher did not hide his frustration where that was concerned.

“All the goals we let in were really poor,” said Maher.

“They will probably say the same about our goals but the goals we let in are avoidable.

“I should be standing here saying we’ve got to penalties and that it’s a lottery to a certain extent.

“But to lose like we have is disappointing to say the least.

The Shrimpers were punished by Ahadme after a defensive mix up between defender Harry Taylor and goalkeeper Collin Andeng Ndi.

And Maher admitted it was painful to see.

“We gave away a free-kick in their box when we’re asking a question and then there’s a little bit of indecision,” said Maher.

“I’m not sure if there’s a call or not but it drops to them and it’s a heartbreaking way to lose.”

However, Maher was proud with the efforts of his players.

“I can’t ask anymore of them,” said the Blues boss.

“It’s a heavy pitch and you can see that.

“The ball is bobbling up as Bridgey is running with it which isn’t ideal.

“We need a good pitch but they really did give everything.

“The subs came on and gave everything too.

“The effort levels were incredible from everyone.”

And Maher also praised Southend’s supporters for the part they played.

“The fans were unbelievable cheering the team on from minute one,” said the Blues boss.

“We thank them for that but let’s not make this a one off for an FA Cup.

“Let’s go and do it again on Saturday when it really matters and get three points.”
