SOUTHEND United’s match with Yeovil Town will rekindle good memories for Shrimpers boss Kevin Maher this weekend.
Blues and the Glovers were regular rivals during Maher’s playing career at Roots Hall.
And Maher still vividly recalls the two teams pushing for the League Two title 20 years ago.
"I remember towards the end of the League Two season we had a close game at Roots Hall where they nicked it,” said Maher.
“We both ended up going up but we've had some good battles down the years.
“There have been a lot of similarities between the two clubs.
“Both teams got to the Championship and did brilliantly for the size of club they are.
“They've both come down the leagues now but there are a lot of good memories there for sure.”
Yeovil were crowned League Two champions before Blues went up via the play-offs.
And that led to the rivalry continuing in League One.
“They had a lot of good players and we had some really, really good games,” said Maher.
“They were good quality games and there were a lot of players from both teams who went on to do very well."
