SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher thought his side’s change formation went ‘OK’ during the goalless draw at Woking.
Maher opted to start with a 4-3-3 formation against the Cards.
And he was pleased with how the Shrimpers adjusted to lining up in a back four.
“There was probably a little bit of confusion at the start of the game because they haven’t really been there before,” said Maher on the defending.
“But Bridgey (Jack Bridge) is still suffering a bit so it was something we looked at.
“It worked OK but work like that should really be done in pre-season.
“We weren’t able to do that but I thought we did OK but then obviously we had to change it from 50 minutes onwards.”
The Shrimpers were forced to change after midfielder Cav Miley was sent off after being shown a second yellow card.
Noor Husin was brought on to replace Bim Pepple after Maher opted to keep Macauley Bonne up top due to his experience.
“It’s been frustrating for Macca and he’s frustrated in there that he hasn’t scored but you can see how clever he is when he’s leaning into people,” said Maher.
“It’s something we haven’t had.
“He’s got that nous of buying fouls at the right time and he holds the ball up.
“When we broke he showed great pace so I’m delighted with him but I’m disappointed for him he couldn’t get a goal.”
