MACAULEY Bonne feels fit enough to start firing for Southend United.
After starting the season without a club, Bonne joined Blues in September but has failed to score in his first 16 appearances.
However, speaking ahead of tomorrow’s clash at Halifax Town, the experienced forward now believes he is back to his best.
And Bonne is confident the goals will soon start to come.
“For me I’d say I’ve only really been fully fit for the past two weeks,” said the former Ipswich Town striker.
“The first 10 appearances was more me trying to find my lungs again after a long time off and over the last few weeks I have been feeling back to myself.
“I came here with a bit of weight to lose and sharpness to get back and the last three games I feel like I’m at my sharpest now.
“My whole career I’ve scored goals in clusters and once one goes in on Saturday I can go on a bit of a run.”
Bonne came close to scoring at Woking on Tuesday night after seeing an early effort saved by Will Jaaskelainen.
But the 29-year-old will not let his head drop after missing an opportunity.
“When I was younger I would’ve beaten myself up,” said Bonne.
“I probably would’ve been punching walls and have broken hands from missing chances but that’s the worst thing you can do.
“I tell people now coming through academies ‘don’t worry about it’.
“As long as I’m in those areas to score I know one of them is going to go in.
“I’ve been playing years now so I know the worst thing you can do after missing a chance is to go under.”
Bonne will therefore look to be on the front foot at Halifax Town and also feels he has rediscovered his hunger for the game since signing for the Shrimpers.
“I always play with a bit of fire in my belly but that fire probably went out the last year or so I would say,” said Bonne.
“I felt like I needed to come somewhere like Southend to get that hunger back for the game.
“ The group of the lads here, the manager and coaches have all been spot on with me.
“They’ve taken to me really well and I’ve taken to them really well too.”
Blues head into tomorrow’s game sitting 16th in the National League table with Halifax in eighth.
