SCOTT Malone missed yesterday's clash with Tranmere Rovers after picking up a toe injury.
The on loan left-back was unable to train in the build up to the game.
And he failed to recover in time to play.
“Scott was in pain so couldn’t figure and that’s why we put Adam Barrett out there,” explained Blues boss Steve Tilson.
“But hopefully he will be back soon.”
Southend suffered a further injury blow during the second half against Tranmere when the on loan Sanchez Watt limped off with an ankle injury.
“That was disappointing because there was space down the left hand side and we could have done with having Sanchez carrying on,” said Tilson.
“But he was limping quite badly towards the end and it was the right decision to bring him off.
"We will know more about his injury in the next 24 to 48 hours."
