THE wet weather wrecked most of the matches in Division Two over the weekend.
But there was some play in an intriguing battle between Wickford and Old Southendian & Southchurch at Southchurch Park.
Southendian batted first and were bowled out for 112.
Skipper Rob Johnston top-scored with 45 from 110 balls but none of his team-mates managed higher than 15.
Daniel Pryke was the best of the Wickford bowlers, taking four wickets for 28 runs, while Asif Abbas claimed three wickets for 37 runs.
But, with the bat, Wickford were 94-8, 19 runs from victory with two wickets remaining when rain brought the game to a premature halt.
Mark Goddard, with 29, was Wickford’s top scorer, while Michael Gridley (4-32) and Zach Dunkley (3-28) both impressed with the ball.
Southendian are now fourth in the table, four points below third-placed Southend whose game at Stanford le Hope also ended prematurely because of the weather.
Southend were put in to bat first and scored 200-5, thanks to 97 from opener Kevin Grant and 50 not out from Ross Daynes.
In reply Stanford reached 101-3 before rain brought the clash to a premature conclusion.
As a result, Southend sit just two points below second-placed Walthamstow.
Fifth-placed Leigh on Sea’s clash at Horndon on the Hill was called off without a ball being bowled while Westcliff had reached 5-0 in four overs before their home game against league leaders Harlow was also called off.
Before Westcliff’s match at Chalkwell Park started, both teams formed a guard of honour as members of Trevor Bailey’s family, including his son Kim Bailey and daughter Sharon Rowlingson, scattered his ashes near the pavilion.
Trevor died following a fire at his Westcliff home in February.
The all-rounder played for Essex for 20 years and England for 10, and also played for Westcliff on Sea after retiring as a professional. A regular Test Match Special commentator, Trevor received a CBE in 1994 for services to cricket.
