SOUTHEND High School for Boys was celebrating after winning the borough athletics for the 30th consecutive year.

The school won all four year groups in a clean sweep that was repeated by Southend High School for Girls in the girls’ section.

“Only eight of our athletes across the age groups failed to win a medal and it’s our highest total for eight years as we scored more than 800 points,” said Southend High PE teacher Stephen Thomas.

“It gets harder every year as Southend Borough is one of the strongest in the County for athletics, with Eastwood Boys and, Westcliff High reaching the national athletics finals this year in intermediate boys and junior boys respectively.

“I’m very pleased and proud to has assisted Southend High in gaining 30 years of victories. This was started by Tim Brooking and John Strickland who were in the PE department at the start of the run in 1981.

“We are hoping its is one of the longest unbeaten runs of a school team in the country, but who knows?”

Eastwood again proved to be the closest challengers to the two Southend Highs, with the girls finishing second in all age groups to come runners-up overall.

The boys came second in all age groups with the exception of year seven, which was won by Westcliff High.

Westcliff High produced a solid set of results to finish third overall in the girls’ and boys’ sections.

Southend High for Boys are hoping to get old boys and staff together for a photo at their sports day on Tuesday, July 19, to mark the 30th anniverary of the start of their winning run.
