THE decision to keep Blair Sturrock at Southend United has divided opinion among the club’s supporters.

The striker, who bagged six goals in 48 games last season, has agreed a new deal — which is believed to be a rolling contract — to remain at Roots Hall.

But that has produced a mixed response from Blues’ fans.

“I think Blair’s a good, hard working player who holds the ball up well,” said Tim Hardwicke, from Benfleet.

“He’s unselfish and puts the miles in that others don’t, so I think it’s good news he’s staying.”

Garry Smith, from Chelmsford, echoed those sentiments and insisted manager Paul Sturrock had been correct in keeping his son at the club.

“Blair is berated by many due to his low games-to-goals ratio but he adds much more to the team,” said the 43-year-old.

“Because of that I’m pleased he’s been given another deal.”

However, not all supporters agreed with the decision, including Sam Thomas from Basildon.

“Blair tries hard but he just isn’t good enough for this level,” said Thomas, 25.

“He’s scored less than 50 goals in his entire career and I very much doubt he would play professional football if it wasn’t for his dad.

“Obviously I hope he proves me wrong next season and goes on to play a part in a successful season for the club, but I just think the money would be better off spent elsewhere on another player.”
