CHRIS Barker has spoken of his pride at being named Southend United’s new skipper.
The experienced centre-back will wear the armband for Blues next season.
And he is delighted to have been given the extra responsibility by manager Paul Sturrock.
“I’m really proud and pleased to have chosen as the team’s captain for this season,” said Barker, who has taken over the role from Craig Easton.
“It was an honour when I wore the armband last year and it will be again this year too.”
Barker captained Blues 15 times last season when Easton was out injured.
But he hopes this season can be more successful for his side, who finished 13th in the League Two table last time around.
“I thought we made real progress last season, especially when you consider where the club were before we got going,” said Barker, 31.
"We really believe we could be up there this year."
