STALWART Southend United supporter Ray Sorrell has reacted angrily to club’s decision to stop his life-long season ticket.
The 83-year-old, who has been following Blues for 77 years, was promised free admission by then chairman John Main back in 1999.
But, as part of continuing cost cutting at Roots Hall, chief executive Tara Brady has now stopped him gaining free admission – although he has offered him a half priced ticket for £120.
“This has really left a bitter taste in my mouth and means I have probably watched my last ever Southend game,” said Sorrell, from Southend.
“I was promised a free season ticket for life as a reward for my loyalty and now they have gone back on that which is disappointing.
“They have offered me a discounted ticket but I’m a pensioner now and can’t really afford that.
“But it’s the principle of the thing which saddens me more than anything else because how much would it actually cost them to keep let me keep my free ticket?”
Sorrell was one of 44 original members of a chairman’s club which was set up by Main to reward those who had continually contributed to the club.
At the time, Main claimed he wanted to change the apparent lack of respect and appreciation the club had shown to people in the past who had given great service to Southend United.
He also gave Sorrell a pass which he insisted was a lifetime membership for free admission.
Sorrell took up the offer and still watched the team last season.
But from now on he will have to pay to see his side in action as Brady battles to improve Blues’ fragile financial position.
“Since I have come to the club I have had to undertake a significant efficiency exercise while maintaining key investments where necessary including the first team squad” explained Brady.
“This has been needed for the sustainability of the club, which is what we all want.
“Until we are able to achieve that we have to be conscientious of all requests put to us.
“We get many, many requests for complimentary tickets in all aspects of the club and unfortunately I have had to reduce it.
“However, I do recognise Mr Sorrell’s personal circumstances and recognise his long term support of the club which is greatly appreciated.
“Unfortunately to date I have not been explained the purpose of the ‘Chairman’s Club’ and the value it creates.
“I am keen to work with those who can support the club going forward while recognising those whose efforts have gone before me.
“I am not aware of the extent of Mr Sorrell’s contribution, however, as a token of good will we offered him half price admission for next season which he chose not to accept.”
