Canvey’S on-loan striker Kyle Asante bagged a hat-trick as the Gulls cruised into the next round of the Ryman League Cup with a 5-1 win over Ware.
Asante, on loan at Park Lane from Southend United, was joined on the scoresheet by Jay Curran and the fit-again Alex Rhodes as Ryman Premier Canvey easily saw off a Ware side who are second from bottom of Ryman Division One North.
Boss John Batch said: “Ware are a better side then their league position suggests so it was a good win.”
Great Wakering Rovers, who are just two places above Ware in Ryman Division One North, were beaten 3-0 in the league by Potters Bar Town.
The game was effectively over after eight minutes when Town’s James Gershfield and Tom Pett had put them 2-0 up. Agdomar Anton hit the third just before half-time.
Wakering boss Danny Greaves said: “We gave away two sloppy goals at the start of the game which is a shame. We can’t keep making those mistakes.”
Back in the Ryman League Cup, East Thurrock United threw away a 2-1 lead at home to Redbridge, crashing out 3-2.
Both sides were playing their first games since high-profile FA Cup first round ties against Macclesfield and Oxford City. Marc Gorbell and Petri Elbi got Rocks’ goals.
Basildon United beat Clapton 3-1 in the second leg of their Essex Senior League Cup tie to go through to the quarter-finals where they will meet Burnham Ramblers who knocked out Hullbridge Sports with a 3-0 win at Lower Road.
