DANNY Greaves emphasised his Great Wakering team are still in the rebuilding process after a poor 5-0 loss away to Brentwood Town.

The visitors made very few chances during the 90 minutes, while mistakes at the back cost them heavily in what is their sixth straight defeat.

Greaves said there were not any real positives to take from the game but he is hopeful things will improve.

He said: “I thought Harrison and the whole back four did well. Our problem is we haven’t got enough quality going up front.

“Since I have been here we have shored up the back but haven’t looked like scoring and we need to bring in players who can do that.”

The Ryman One North game burst into life in the 12th minute when Brentwood right back Ryan Doyle saw his shot get deflected to wrong-foot Ashley Harrison in goal.

After the goal, the home side — who were sluggish in the first ten minutes — started opening up Wakering more with opportunities, including a Dean Green effort, following a mazy long run from Steve Butterworth, which was deflected over.

Ten minutes before half time, Brentwood doubled their lead when Nick Skelton turned a Green cross into his own net after Butterworth’s pass had sent the forward through on the right wing.

Despite getting the ball in and around Brentwood’s area, Wakering never managed to connect a decent pass at the right time or were caught in an offside trap.

Brentwood kept applying pressure during the second half with Green unable to take advantage of lacklustre defending when he drilled a shot into Harrison’s legs in the 55th minute.

In the 71st minute the game was put out of Wakering’s reach when Darren Blewitt found himself embarrassingly free inside the area from a corner to head into the goal.

Green missed an open goal three minutes later before midfielder Lee Blackburn struck a beautiful shot from outside the area which sailed over Harrison’s head and into the top left corner of the net.

Blackburn finished proceedings off three minutes later when he nodded in substitute Kieran Ogunkoya’s right-wing cross.
