SOUTHEND United manager Paul Sturrock looks set to freshen up his side for tonight’s first round FA Cup replay against Preston North End.

But he is still keen to progress in the competition.

Sturrock will leave out players suffering with slight knocks for the clash at Roots Hall.

However, the Scotsman feels the team will be able to win the tie.

“Fitness wise we’re not going to be taking a chance on anyone and we have two or three players struggling with injuries,” said Sturrock.

“They’re getting through games but then can train for a few days so I think they will benefit from having a week off before the Bristol Rovers game.

“That’s not to say we don’t want to win or aren’t taking the competition seriously though because that’s not in my make up and it’s also financially important for the football club as well.”

Sturrock would not reveal who would be missing the game but Liam Dickinson is believed to be among those who could be rested.

Neil Harris is pushing for a recall but Sturrock his side are in for a tough test as there will be less pressure on Preston playing away from home.

“This is a very hard game for us and Preston won’t have people baying for their blood in the stands,” said Sturrock.

“That means they will be able to be more relaxed and that’s normally when teams are at their best.

“It was only last season that they were in the Championship as well but we’re going in to this game full of confidence after our recent good run of form.”

Blues will be without winger Ryan Leonard for the tie as he again misses out with the back problem he sustained towards the end of the first clash with Preston 10 days ago.

Midfielder Anthony Grant is absent as well as he serves the final game of a three match suspension after he was sent off at Oxford United in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.
