LOUIS Godwin-Green says he believes former Great Wakering team-mate Dan Trenkel would be the ideal man to take over as manager at the club.
And the goalkeeper also revealed he would jump at a chance of a return to Burroughs Park himself, following his release a fortnight ago.
Godwin-Green says he was “gutted” to be let go by Danny Greaves, who quit as manager this week following a six-game losing run.
And the shot-stopper said he is keeping a close eye on who the club appoint next to see if it will pave the way for his immediate return.
He said: “I think they need to get someone in who knows the club, but wants to take it in a new direction.
“It has a good youth and reserve team set-up in place, and all it needs now is a manager with new ideas who is repected by the players.”
Godwin-Green said he felt former club captain Trenkel, who left the club in the summer, would fit the bill He said: “He was a great leader in our side and I know all the players still respect him.
“And he is one of those people who has got an old head on young shoulders, so I’m sure he would do well.”
Godwin-Green and coach Danny Heath took temporary charge of the side after Ryan Wilkinson stepped down, and before Greaves was appointed.
They guided the side to a league win over Ilford and a draw against Enfield Town, and a cup defeat to AFC Sudbury.
And the keeper said he felt Greaves struggled because he made too many unnecessary changes to the side.
He said: “I think we only needed a few players in, some older and more experienced heads.
“I don’t know why he decided to stand down, but I can only think he gave it his all but just found it too difficult.”
Godwin-Green said he was surprised to see Greaves bring in two new goalkeepers, but said he was told they were only cover for him, so he was “shocked” to be released with a Friday morning phone call.
He said that within an hour he was called by Ian Walker and asked to provide keeper cover at his Conference North Bishop’s Stortford side.
And, despite a man-of-the-match showing in his first game against Solihull Moors, he said he is desperate to return to Burroughs Park and add to his 199 appearances for the club.
Godwin-Green said: “My family still live locally, and I have got so much respect for people on the committee there, so if they asked me to go back and I would be there tomorrow.”
