PETER Clarke wants both Huddersfield Town and Southend United to keep extending their unbeaten run of results to secure promotion this season.

Clarke, who made 150 appearances during three seasons with Blues, has skippered Town to a league record 43 games without defeat.

But he is also thrilled to see Southend flying high as well.

“At Huddersfield we’re all very proud and pleased of what we’ve achieved but the main aim is still to play for and that’s promotion,” said Clarke, 29.

“Things are going well at the moment and I’m delighted they are at Southend too.

“I had three great seasons at the club and my little girl was born down there as well so I really did leave with a heavy heart.

“Their result is still the first one I look for every Saturday and I’m pleased things are going well again.

“A dream season for me would be for Huddersfield and Southend to both be promoted and I would definitely enjoy my holidays that summer if that was the case.”

Clarke joined Huddersfield from Southend on a free transfer in the summer of 2009 and has since shone brightly at the heart of their defence.

He has been voted player of the year twice and, last season, he was also named League One’s player of the season.

However, the former England youth international has yet to achieve the prize he most wants with Town - promotion.

“Without getting ahead of ourselves I do feel like we’re getting closer to promotion now,” said Clarke.

“We’ve strengthened well with the signings we’ve made and certainly want to try and avoid the play-offs again.

“Including my time with Southend I’ve been beaten in them three times now and it certainly wasn’t third time lucky for me last season.

“But hopefully we can be in the top two this season and so can Blues because without being disrespectful to the rest of the league I do feel they’re too big to be a League Two club.”
