STEVE King says Concord Rangers are determined to make the most of their last realistic chance of silverware this season as they head into a last 16 showing with Conference South heavyweights Chelmsford tonight.
The centre back, who scored a hat-trick in the last round against Southend Manor, says everyone at the Canvey-based club is focused on having a good run in a competition in which they were runners-up in 2009.
And he said that despite the need to improve on their place at the wrong end of the Ryman Premier table, there is no way they will be taking tonight's clash at the Melbourne Stadium lightly.
He said: “I’m one of those players who will give 110 per cent in a friendly, and we will be going there to win.
“It is the last cup competition we are left in and our last realistic chance of having some success this year.
“It might not be the most glamourous of the cup competitions, but I know it means a lot to the management and everyone at the club, and we would all love to win it.”
King says he now feels fully recovered from the ankle problem which dogged him at the start of the season, and that he is happy with the burgeoning central-back partnership he has struck up with the giant Ryan Tafazolli.
“He’s about 6ft 9in tall, so it’s not hard to see where his strengths are!” said King. “He’s experienced and he’s aerially dominant, but he’s also mobile and can play a bit and that means he can recover well if he loses the ball.”
King said he believes their poor start in the league has been partly down to the determination of teams visiting Thames Road in wanting to make up for defeats there during last season’s excellent debut by the Beachboys in the division.
And the free-scoring former Bishop’s Stortford and Romford defender also revealed he sets himself a secret goal target at the start of each season.
