BLUES’ reserve team boss Graham Coughlan wants his players to use tonight’s Essex Senior Cup clash with Grays Athletic as an opportunity to force their way in to Paul Sturrock’s plans.

Southend face Oldham Athletic in the FA Cup this weekend before they play Swindon Town in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy the following Tuesday.

And Coughlan wants those involved against Grays at Roots Hall to show they should be picked for those matches.

“Tonight’s game is a window of opportunity for the players,” said Coughlan.

“If the manager decided to rest players for the cup games or change things around then those playing tonight need to impress this evening to force their way into his thinking.

“There should also be an edge to the game as it’s another cup competition and hopefully we can play well.”

Goalkeeper Glenn Morris is expected to start against the Ryman One North high-flyers after recovering from a thigh strain.

Lee Sawyer, who was left out of the squad for last Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Bristol Rovers, is also in the squad, along with Anthony Grant, Luke Prosser, Blair Sturrock and Coughlan.

But Jemal Johnson will not be involved after he was released on police bail.

The winger was quizzed by detectives last week in connection with an alleged assault outside Faces nightclub in Ilford.
