SOUTHEND’S director of rugby Chris Green admitted his side never looked like ending their wretched record at Redruth on Saturday.
The Seasiders, who have never triumphed away at the Cornwall club, were thrashed 49-6.
And Green was incredibly disappointed by the display.
“We just didn’t seem to turn up and it was a very bad day at the office for us,” said Green.
“When you go to Redruth you need to be on it from the word go but we just weren’t like that at all.
“With their big crowd behind them it’s hard to come back in to a game there once you go behind and in truth we never looked like we were going to do that either.”
As a result, it took Redruth just six minutes to open the scoring as fly-half Aaron Penberthy put them in front with a well taken penalty before he added another three points seven minutes later.
Southend did come close to hitting back when Chris Waring set up Michael Guess to touch down in the corner.
But the try was ruled out for a forward pass.
To make matters worse for the Seasiders, Guess pulled a hamstring in the process of crossing the line and was unable to continue.
However, despite the departure of the powerful prop, Southend did get points on board when Andrew Frost kicked a penalty.
Penberthy then did likewise for the hosts to make it 9-3 before Redruth scored their first try of the afternoon when Rhodri McAtee, a sevens international for Wales who is on loan from Cornish Pirates, cutting through.
Redruth then increased their lead even further when number eight Tom Duncan touched down and Penberthy added the conversion to make it 21-3.
But, just before the half-time break, Frost kicked a second penalty for Southend.
That was to be the visitors’ last score of the game though as Redruth began to dominate.
Penberthy scored a try he also converted after 48 minutes before winger Nathan Pedley touched down 10 minutes later and Penberthy again added the extras.
McAtee then piled on more misery with two more tries which were both converted by Penberthy who ended the game with 24 points after missing just one of his nine kicks.
Despite the defeat, Southend remain seventh in the National Two South standings but they now trail Redruth, the team just above them in the table, by 10 points.
Things do not get any easier for the Seasiders either as they host fourth placed Hartpury College at Warners Bridge this weekend.
