Billericay boxer Karl Davis came away with his head held high after giving a great account of himself as he fought for a national title in Harlow.

The 16-year-old southern counties champion lost on points against the very strong northern England champion James Blenkinsop at the 2011 Club’s for Young People (CYP) Championships at Harlow’s Greyhound Stadium.

Davis joined Billericay Boxing club five years ago, and his coach Les Cooke said he had done himself and the club proud.

“Getting to a national final is more than most boxers can dream of doing within their time in the sport,” said Cooke.

“And on the night, although Karl lost to a stronger fighter, he could walk away knowing he did the best he could.

“It was even early on and it was a tight fight, but the other lad was an awkward southpaw and kept in front throughout.

“But Karl has been an inspiration to the rest of the club’s boxers and coaches after showing tremendous skill and heart to get to this stage.”

Davis reached the final with victory over Portsmouth’s southern counties regional champion Alfie Steeves, and was the only representative from Essex to reach the National Finals out of more than 35 original entries.

And the teenager, who is training to become a Royal Marine, told the club’s website he was happy with his performance on the night.

He said: “Even though I lost, I cannot be disappointed as I tried my hardest and the better boxer won.

“Thanks to everyone who came down and supported me, I couldn’t have asked for anything more than that.

“And I was also like to thank my coaches who have trained me to get to this stage of the competition.

“I really appreciate everything that everyone has done for me and I’m proud to be a Billericay boxer.”

Davis’ next bout will be on December 9 in Dublin, Ireland, when he’ll box the Irish National Youth Champion.
