BRADLEY Burr will make his first start for Southend tomorrow when they host in-form Hartpury College at Warners Bridge.
The 18-year-old fly half has been on the bench for the Seasiders three times so far this season.
But he looks set to be given his full debut this weekend.
“We have a number of injuries for the game but that means other players will be given an opportunity, including Bradley,” confirmed Southend’s head coach Andy Holloway.
“He’s a young lad but he’s done well in the second team and when he’s come on so he deserves the opportunity to show what he can do from the start.”
Burr’s chance will come in difficult circumstances though as the Seasiders will be without several of their first team regulars.
Full-back Andrew Frost misses out with a shoulder problem, while prop Michael Guess has a hamstring injury, number eight Joe Van Der Molen an ankle problem and scrum half Sam Arnott serves the final match of his three game ban after being sent off at Clifton.
His replacement Harry Branch will miss out this weekend with a shoulder injury while Simon Hoult is unavailable along with Chris Green (back) and Todd Bailey (head) to leave Holloway short of options.
Ben Scully will make his first start of the season at scrum half while Luke Irvine will come in for Guess at prop and back row Jamie Douglas is also pushing for a start in what promises to be a difficult test against a Hartpury side who sit fourth in the National Two South standings.
“Hartpury are having a good season and will definitely be a top four team this year,” said Holloway.
“They have a strong links with Gloucester whose Academy players study at the college but they have a bit of experience as well, including a good fly half who used to be at Cinderford.”
Southend go in to their first ever meeting with Hartpury College seventh in the table.
And Holloway is keen to bounce back from last weekend’s disappointing 49-6 defeat at Redruth.
“That game was over after about 10 minutes and we didn’t do ourselves justice at all,” said Holloway.
“We needed to have people who were up for the game and not just people who said they were.
“It’s another real test tomorrow now and we will definitely have to improve if we are to get a better result.”
